Top 100 in regional performance

Of the top 100 in this year’s rankings, we’ve highlighted some of the notable performances by universities in different locations in the region:

  • China’s research impact makes it the most influential research hub in Asia. The QS measure of research impact, ‘Citations per Paper’, places 24 Chinese universities in the top 50 of the regions, four times the next best location. This research is underpinned by intense levels of international collaboration, in which 15 universities are in the top 50 for International Research Network, twice that of the next top-performing location.
  • Malaysia has an exceptional concentration of top-quality universities, with 22% of its institutions ranking among Asia’s top 100. When compared to any other location with more than 10 ranked universities, this is the highest proportion.
  • Universities in Japan are among the most prestigious in the region, both for academics and employers. The University of Tokyo (14th) is Asia’s leading university according to both Employer and Academic Reputation scoring 100 equally. Meanwhile, Kyoto University (17th) places the second highest in Asia for Employer Reputation (99.9) and sixth among academics.
  • Kazakhstan ranks higher than any other Central Asian country, with 34 ranked universities – which is twice as many as its closest competitor, Uzbekistan (with 14 universities ranked). Kazakhstan is also the only Central Asian country with an institution listed among the top 100. Namely, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (ranked 29th) and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) ranked 71st.

New entrants

A total of 148 institutions are featured in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2024 for the first time ever – among those excelling in certain categories in the top 300 include North Eastern Hill University and Yamanashi University with a shared score of 100 in ‘Faculty student’, Islamic Azad University with 100 in ‘International research network’ and Shiraz University of Technology with 100 in ‘Staff with PhD’.

Sowter also added that “Asian higher education continues to expand exponentially in scale and remains one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in India, which surpasses China for its number of ranked universities. Meanwhile, the economic landscape of the region remains perennially and uniquely dynamic, with economic miracles and challenges creating an equally dynamic higher education environment.”
