Who Topped the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2021?

The National University of Singapore has retained its top spot in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2021. Discover the top ten institutions below.  

The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2021 are now live, and the National University of Singapore has topped the list for the third subsequent year 

Tsinghua University from Mainland China got their first ever second place, climbing from fourth in last year’s rankings.  

Nanyang Technological University in Singapore came in third place, dropping one place from its second position last year. The University of Hong Kong also dropped one place, moving from third to fourth place.  

Zhejiang University from Mainland China has seen a significant improvement, rising eight places in the past few years, with the institution now sitting in fifth place. 

From Mainland China, Fudan Universitynow sits in sixth place (rising from seventh), and Peking University sits in seventh place (dropping from fifth).  

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has retained its spot, remaining in eighth place.  

Universiti Malaya in Malaysia entered the top ten for the first time, now holding ninth place after rising from 13th in last year’s ranking.  

Shanghai Jiao Tong University from Mainland China also saw a huge increase, moving from 17th in last year’s rankings to tenth place this year.  

Notably, this year’s Asian rankings include 634 institutions, compared to 550 last year, making it the biggest QS Asian rankings yet.  

Institutions from Mainland China dominated the rankings with 124 institutions included, followed by 106 institutions from India, 98 institutions from Japan, and 85 institutions from South Korea. These major locations accounted for more than 65% of all represented universities in these rankings.  

Additionally, more than 75% of all ranked institutions are classified as those with high or very high research intensity, a particularly special feature of the Asia rankings.  

This year’s rankings saw 93 new entrants, mostly from Japan, India, South Korea, and Pakistan. Six of these entrants secured ranks in the top 250. 

For academic reputation and employer reputation respectively, the University of Tokyo from Japan remains number one in the region.
